Kids Rubber Duck Snow Joggers Have Arrived!

You may have seen these gracing the (Project) Runway on many fabulous folks feet (Check out Heidi Klum and daughter Leni left), and now the Kids' SnowJogger boots from Rubber Duck are here to cover your child's tootsies in practical style! These cool colorful kids' snow boots are both practical and super stylin' and are the brainchild of Eik Braun Ottosen of Denmark. The SnowJogger is available in pink, red, blue and rainbow in sizes 8-1 for a snowy style that'll bring an extra smile to every snow man you meet!
Ottosen parlayed his business background into a hip footwear company, Rubber Duck Brand, that has taken the world by storm with their-ready-to-wear winter gear. His inspiration came to him one day as he walked his dog, Nuki, through the snow. In one big Ah-ha moment, the SnowJogger was born, combining the comfort of a running shoe sole with the with the warmth of a padded upper. Style mavens with cold feet everywhere rejoiced at the sight of these brightly colored snowboots, which are perfectly suited to the young and young at heart!
Speaking of hearts, Ottosen has followed through with his mission to not only have a rockin' company, but one that makes a positive difference in the world as well. With the introduction of his new (SMILE) Project, he brought new meaning to the song, "Rubber Duckie, you're the one!" Besides making bathtime a lotta fun, 100% of the profits from his new colorful ducks, available at rubberduckbrand.com, are donated to people who dedicate their lives to making a difference to others. That warms the heart, and the SnowJogger warms the toes! Auf Wiedersehen!

Yummy Recipes! Spatulatta Presents the Pilgrim Hat!

The Quinoa Vegetarian Pilgrim's Hat!

The Lovely Spatulatta ladies were kind enough to share their Pilgrim's Hat recipe with us. For more on the creators of this yummy treat, check out our cool interview with Liv and Belle!

Before you begin: Quinoa is a grain from the Andes and has been eaten for thousands of years by native people in South America. It much prized by vegetarians because it has a lot of proteins that other grains don't have. This is a recipe that will need an adult with strong arms and a very sharp knife to cut the squash into rings. Acorn squash is a “winter”squash and unlike “summer”squash like zucchini, it has a very hard shell. The shell protects the acorn squash seeds while it lays on the ground through the whole winter. In the spring the shell will finally break open. The meat of the squash that you eat is really there to cover the seeds and nourish them while they germinate and grow roots that will burrow down into the soil. Serves 6.

You'll need:
  • 1 Acorn squash - about 5 inches in diameter
  • 2/3 cup light brown sugar –firmly packed
  • ½ cup of butter or margarine –melted
  • 4 tablespoons of vegetable bouillon
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 large onion - diced
  • 2 stalks of celery –finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon of ground sage
  • 1-2 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 roasted red peppers - cut into strips
  • Cooking spray
  • Aluminum foil
  • Wax-lined paper cups –6-ounce size
  • Adult help –big time!
Equipment:
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • A cookie sheet
  • A really sharp knife
  • A 3-quart pot with lid
  • A skillet
  • Wooden spoons
  • A pastry brush
Pilgrim's Hat How-to:
  1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees F or 175 degrees C.
  2. Lightly coat the cookie sheet with cooking spray.
  3. Have dad or whoever is helping you cut the acorn squash in half through what would be the equator if it were a globe of the world. This will be difficult because of the shape of the squash. Have the adult start by making a little cut through the tough shell and then inserting the tip of the knife into the cut. The trick is to slide the knife in and turn the squash at the same time so the knife is only cutting through one wall of the squash at a time. Trying to saw through the squash is almost impossible. Have the adult slice the squash into 1-inch rings.
  4. Pull the seeds and strings out of the center of the squash rings. Place them on the cookie sheet and cover with aluminum foil.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until tender.
  6. While the squash is baking, boil 4 cups water then add the bouillon. You could also use 4 cups of vegetable stock.
  7. Stir in 2 cups of quinoa and cook 10-15 minutes, or until all water is absorbed.
  8. Meanwhile, combine the sugar and melted butter.
  9. When the squash is tender, brush the butter/sugar mixture on the top side of the baked squash. Put it back in the oven and bake, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes.
  10. Melt 1-2 tablespoons of butter in the skillet and sauté the onion and celery with the ground sage until onions are translucent. Mix into the cooked quinoa. Spoon the warm mixture into your paper cup "molds" and press them firmly to set the shape. Lay the candied squash rings on individual plates. Carefully, turn out a quinoa hat “crown”into middle of each squash ring. Garnish with a roasted red pepper strip for the hatband.
Happy Turkey Day! -Liv and Belle!

Mama Lavona's Astrology: Baby Scorpio and Sagittarius

Greetings, friends! As the winds grow colder, we welcome little Scorpios and Sagittarians to the world!
SCORPIO

Scorpios
are deep and intense. They feel and do everything with great passion. Emotions run deep for those native to this sign. (However, their deepest feeling are usually kept hidden.) They love a good mystery...but no scary movies! They are deeply affected by everything around which can make them feel insecure at times. For this reason (s)he may become possessive of those she loves. Sibling rivalry is not uncommon with Scorpio children. Reassure him/her often that (s)he is loved and safe. A Scorpio child treated with love and kindness will stay close to you for life. But a hurt Scorpio can be very unforgiving or vengeful even! Handle with Care! Scorpios need a great deal of privacy and special place to call their own where (s)he feels safe and secure. Give him/her a little box where he/she can hide special mementos. Or a diary with lock and key. Scorpios despite their deep emotions are not wishy washy at all and will impress you with their strong
will and determination.

Birthstone: Topaz, Bloodstone

Essential Oil: Rose, Myrrh

Gift Ideas: A Safe, diary with lock and key, microscope

SAGITTARIUS

Sagittarius is as optimistic as they come! They are blessed with a sunny disposition! But can just as easily flare up into a temper tantrum if (s)he is kept waiting for anything. Don’t worry though, the episodes are usually brief and (s)he’ll return to his/her warm loving self. Sagittarians are happiest when exploring the world around them. They love going for long walks, seeing new faces and new places. Sagittarius is not likely to sit back and watch the parade go by, they want to be on the float! They are players not spectators! Sports will keep them happy AND out of trouble.. Your little one one will have quite an affinity with animals, so trips to the zoo will be a hit. Freedom and exploration are the keys to happiness for Sagittarrius. But it’s important to know when to say ‘NO’ so s(he) doesn’t wander down inappropriate paths. This little tyke is sure to keep you on your toes!

Birthstone: Lapis Lazuli, turquoise

Essential Oil: Bergamot, calendula, clove

Gift Ideas: Globe, atlas, sports equipment, dance or martial arts lessons

Congratulations to Big Hair Contest Winner, Nicole!

To quote the fabulous Stevie Wonder, "Isn't She Lovely?" The winning look, from Nicole of Chicago, is called the "Wall Of Hair" and Nicole was kind enough to let us in on her hairstyling tips!
To get the Wall of Hair, "A curling iron, fine tooth comb, lots of aerosol spray and a blow dryer are needed. Curl it all, rat it up, spray, bow dry and repeat. After plenty of hairspray and 20 minutes, you, too, can have a WALL of hair like this. Pretty classy stuff. Goes well with leggings, jelly shoes, oversized blazer with large shoulder pads, and lots of bracelets. Long Live the 80's, but thankfully, this hairstyle was put to rest long ago and has since been replaced by a much-more toned down (ie no wall style)." Thanks for the tips, Nicole. You've made everyone really happy with your big hair, except of course, those poor hair spray bottles that long for your tresses!
Nicole is the winner of the cool Bead Shop Styling Kit, which is a super cool gift for your Little Lady! Hopefully, we can get some cool pics of the new looks created!

Join Our Virtual Food Drive For Association House!

This is our turkey. He wears sneakers and is super cute and was created by Anna for our storefront as a way to give thanks for all the riches we all enjoy. Our-as-of-yet-unnamed turkey-lurkey has another gift to give though. We are asking clients at our brick and mortar to fill out a feather and say what they are thankful for this Holiday seaaon. For every feather completed, we will donate a canned or packaged food item to the Association House Food Drive we have started, as we would love your help! Consider our Comments section your virtual feathers - we will add you to our turkey in-house and give you updates on our turkey's progress if you'll tell us what you're thankful for. This has been really fun to do with the kids, and all of the feathers go to a great cause, so please join us in giving our turkey some flair! We'll begin. . . we are thankful for you!

Yummy! We'll take 5 Take 5's, Thank You!

So, in the aftermath of Halloween, Lisa brought her extra candy to our main office in what can only be described as a giant bag o sugar! She always has the most happenin' Halloween house with decorations and a scare walk and all that kind of fun stuff, and as you can imagine, that sort of thing requires a lot of candy. We were lucky enough to luck out and get the residuals! Everyone was all excited about the array of Blow Pops and delicious Kit Kats, Hershey Bars and such. That was, until, we rooted around in the bag and found what has been ruled The Best Candy This Office Has Ever Seen! We have taken a vote. It is unanimous (except for "strict veggie" Katy, who opted out!). Take 5 Rules!!!! It is made by the Hershey's Company, and for this goodness, we would like to say, thank you Hershey's. Seriously, the next time you Take5 have a Take 5 with its chocolate, peanut, peanut butter, pretzel goodness. There' s no need to thank us- we're taking 5!

We were Googling our tushies off today, and happened upon these ingenious Jumbo Baby Food Cubes that we are melting down over! Now, some of us made baby food all the time while our kids were growing, and these look to be a super upgrade from earlier forms! The cubes are all 2 oz individual containers with attached lids, that are perfect for storing breastmilk or yummy foods and have a tray that they fit into that makes it easy to freeze! It's Bump Day with RockStarMoms!

Spit. Cries. Yells. Applause. Driving around town like you're on tour. Yep, every Mom is a Rock Star! Leah Brumley, a Momtrepreneur, fully understands a Mom's rock n roll lifestyle! A record-store owner turned soccer mother of four, didn't want to give up her rock n roll style when she became a Mom, so she also "gave birth" to the Rock Star Moms maternity line in 2003!
While pregnant, Brumley was inspired by the fact that while shopping she couldn't find the tops and clothes she would want to wear! Since every Mom is a rock star is their own right, she whipped up her line, that is now at the top of the international charts! Starting with fun tube tops featuring the likes of Bob Marley and the Rolling Stones, Brumley soon branched out into cool Jug Rug Nursing Covers that feature the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Grateful Dead and other classic rock bands!
Leah has been featured on CNBC's "The Big Idea" as well as many other morning talk shows, because her comfy and rockin' clothes give soon-to-be-moms the round of applause they deserve! She has not ever forgotten her rockin' roots, however. As she branched out into an eco-friendly line, fitness wear and a private label maternity line, she takes pride in employing women and mothers in her community. That's gotten her a standing ovation from herhusband Jeremy, and her kids, Austin (14), Brent (12), Scout (4), and Ryder (5 weeks) as well as the many ladies out there who are proud to be Rock Star Moms!

We're Melting Down over flipping kitties!

Just like the kiddies after they play with the shopping car in our store, today everyone in the pffice is melting down over this postcard we got in the mail...with Acrocats on it. Yep. Add the words "Acrobat" and "Cat" together and you've got the Acrocats (There are also Rock Cats playing guitars, but we digress). We're not sure what the deal fully is, as the postcard was to inform us that the Acrocats will be performing on November 9 at both 1 and 3 (you could go twice!!!) at the Gorilla Tango Theater. We are tooling over the idea of going over there are watching these feline Olympians do their things.... has anyone ever seen this in action? If so, we'd love a full report! One of them is named Tuna (shown) though, and we think it is definitely worth checking out the website for You Tube clips galore!

To get more info on the Acrocats, go to Amazinganimals.biz

It's Bump Day!!!

In honor of the middle of the week, we'd like to proclaim Wednesday "Bump Day" and provide features, interviews and info for all our pregnant friends! To kick off Bump Day, we thought nothing would be better than Momtreprenuer, Jessica Kim of BabbaCo Covers to inspire those with a bun in the oven!

Jessica Kim's inspiration to start BabbaCo was to balance her entrepreneurial dreams while still getting to spend lots of time with her little 19 month old girl Kayla, who, says Jessica, "Cracks me up and makes me want to be a better person!" Jessica's dream of bringing the super cute to the super functional led to her creation of some of the coolest car seat covers on the market!

Jessica speaks to all the busy mamas in the world who take that dream of having it all and apply themselves to making it a reality! Jessica says, "Becoming a mom, I found juggling in reality was not an easy task. I wanted to be Top Mom, Top Model and Top Career Woman. Although many would argue that being top in all of those things was impossible, I concluded that finding some sort of balance was crucial. So, I created BabbaCo. to exude that aspiration of all parents (Moms AND Dads!) and developed products that were high in both functionality and design!
BabbaCo. covers are fleece and cotton delights with mixed patterns and fun styles like the Beep Beep (shown) that are sure to put a smile on your baby's face whilst you stroll! Jessica has more fun products in the works that are innovative and mom/dad proven, and we have to say, we just can't wait for more of Jessica's mix of products that make life easier and are super cute!

Mama Lavona's Horoscope: Libra!

Little Libra is charm personified and (s)he learns from a very young age how to use this to his/her advantage! Peace and Harmony are the key to happiness for Libra and for this reason they are natural Diplomats. Don’t be surprised if you find him/her working out disputes on the playground. The only thing worse than a chaotic environment is an ugly one. Libra is is the sign of balance and beauty so an aesthetically pleasing environment is of utmost importance. (S)he will display his/her artistic sensibility at an early age, so let your little one help decorate his/her own room and help choose their own wardrobe. You might find young Libra doing a lot of talking and debating. They enjoy exchanging ideas and require a lot of freedom to explore his/her world. Give your little Libra a kid’s camera or journal to document his/her discoveries! (S)he’ll love to entertain you with stories about his/her explorations.

Trick or Treat Psycho Baby 10/26 and 10/31

Join us for Wicker Park Shops Trick or Treat on Sunday, October 26th from 11-5. The Midwest Bank Parking Lot has got it goin' on with a petting zoo, costume parade and more!
After many brainstorming sessions and one secret ballot (we are serious about Halloween!) the Psycho Baby team will be passing out candy on Oct. 31st (10-6) dressed as pop icons of the 80's! Be sure to stop by our brick and mortar for big bangs, candy and tunes! Our Halloween book reading is slated for Oct 29th at 10:30 am and promises to be a monster of a good time! Kick back with a musical preview of our 80's Halloween, and send us your tales of tails, mullets and that big hair!
I'll go first: The big hair was a must have to complete my tee, Jordache Jean, jelly bracelet look! I had The Hair That Reached For The Sky for a bit, so I had a system for curling where I could complete the Look is less time than it took to sing "Lucky Star" The Big Hair's Demise has to do with all of us gals not eating lunch after swim class so we could take our cordless curling irons out of our handbags and re-curl the Fwahhh! for our afternoon classes. At the start of semester, I had what was termed a "Front Front, Back Back" which took 4 separate curling patterns, some ratting and also at least a can of Aqua Net per day! Twice in one day got to be too much and I got hungry, so by the end of the semester, I had no big bangs and an air-dry because I just couldn't handle the hair-metal "mane-tenance!" I was thrilled to get into the 90's and go grungetastic!

If you were rockin' the Kid from Kid and play or your Hair Just Wanted to Have Fun, send us your story in the Special Comments Box! Or, enter your Big Hair Photo in Our 80's Photo Contest! Send your Big Hair Pic to contest@psychobaby.net with your contact info and what name you'd like to appear under your photo til Nov. 15th, 2008 and then get votin' - photos will appear on our blog under the Psycho Baby of the month, and the winner will receive the Bead Shop Hair Design Kit, valued at $25.00!

Cool, Crazy Person of the Month - Harald Husum from Appaman!

Harald Husum has been bringing his Scandinavian take on American pop imagery to Appaman, his cool line of kids' clothes, since 2003! We are thrilled to be hosting Appaman's birthday party at our brick and mortar store (Sunday, September 28, 2008) because we have loved Harald's cool streetwear since the first time we got" struck" by his lightning bolt tee years ago. Harald named his cool kids' clothes company after the corduroy monkey friend he had as a child, so he knows what it is like to feel like a revolutionary one day and a Nascar driver the next. Available in Baby, Toddler and Big Kid sizes, his cool cotton tees, funky jackets and hip new denim line denim are super cool and comfy and born of the "Mean Streets of Brooklyn!" Appaman's designs are wantin' to bring some "street cred" to your little one, to thank them for being the high-octane, groovy, imaginative little folks they are. In one of Appaman's bright designs, they'll be ready to take over the world....one cool tee at a time, with the help of their stuffed pals! Here's to Harald, our Cool, Crazy Person for October, and his answers to our Psycho Questions!

1. What is the coolest thing that has ever happened to you?

My three girls. And a little monkey.

2. What is the craziest fashion statement you have ever made?

My wife would say my leather pants. Don’t know, maybe my white and orange Billy Idol hair in the 90’s? Have toned it down now. Gold sneakers?

3. What is your favorite book?

Papillon

4. What toy can you not live without?

My Iphone.

5. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Fly to the moon

6. Who is the coolest parent you know (ties between your own Mom and Dad are totally understandable!)?

Definitely not myself. Maybe Ruby C’s dad, he’s really funny
