Happy Fat Tuesday!

Our online customer care representative, Julius, was kind enough to share his King Cake with us (see left, yum!!!!)! Hailing from New Orleans, Julius has brought the cheer and fun of Mardi Gras, which begins on Jan. 6th, to Psycho Baby, and we have learned so much that we would like to share with you! Here's our tips for a Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras celebration with the kids at home or on the go in New Orleans!

Party on at home...

-Make your own masks using the classic paper plate, string and glitter combo! Since Mardi Gras celebrates diversity, we love starting with the classic paper plate palette and then jazzing it up beyond your widest dreams! While we love the classic gold, green and purple of Mardi Gras, we say go hog wild, adding bits of construction paper or extra plates, markers, crayons and more to make the coolest masks ever!
- Make a mini float out of an old cardboard box! A perfect group project, kids can pick a theme or just have fun creating a "giant" version of something they adore!
- Have a parade around the play room with your floats and masks and costumes - just don't forget the beads, glitz and music!
- Order a specialty King's Cake straight from New Orleans! Julius recieved one from Haydel's Bakery and was kind enough to share! This yummy cake is based on the story of the epiphany and the Wise Men. A sculpted braided round pastry, the King's Cake is beautifully decorated and comes with a surprise good luck charm inside. Varying from a coin to plastic babies, the "finder" receives good luck and gets to host the party next year! (I was the lucky recipient of ours, and I do have to say that it was like winning the lottery, and I can't wait to host the fun next year!) After a special Mardi Gras lunch or dinner where you eat in your costumes, the King's Cake makes the perfect ending to a fun and Fat Tuesday, the last day of Mardi Gras!

If you visit New Orleans don't miss....
-The Mardi Gras parades! Get the routes on the bigeasy.com
- Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World! Get a tour of the digs where some of the coolest floats are created! While you're there, take a trip to the Prop Shop (wheee!) and grab a tour which includes a visit to the costume shop! The fun begins when you set off for Mardi Gras World, which is a ferry ride away from Canal Street!
-Storyland! Part of the City Park Attractions, Storyland features over 25 famous scenes from books that kids can play away on! Storyland is a fun and imagination-filed play date, but remember that all City Park Attractions are closed on Fat Tuesday!
-Bonus pick from Julius: the Lousiana Children's Museum full of family fun!

A Cool New Lincoln Kids' Tee to Celebrate His Birthday!

Inky Dink Has given a Presidential makeover on this cool kids Lincoln mohawk tee! Celebrate his 200-year anniversary with this fun kids graffiti t-shirt and share these fun facts with your little student of history!

*President Lincoln was once a little boy, too, and was born Feb. 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky.
*Psycho Baby's home state, Illinois, is known as the Land of Lincoln. He lived in Kentucky and Indiana before moving to New Salem, Illinois, where he studied and worked at a store.
*He married Mary Todd and had four sons of his own.
*He ran for president in 1860 as the Republican candidate, and is known for his historical leadership during the Civil War, and his speeches, especially the Emancipation Proclamation and Gettysburg Address, which a lot of us still have memorized to this day.
*At 6' 4" inches, Lincoln was our tallest president!
*Unfortunately, President Lincoln was the first president to be assassinated, on April 14, 1865, but his leadership is still felt to this day across the nation.
*President Lincoln is known for his somber leadership in times of great crisis, but don't go thinking that he didn't have a sense of humor! Here's a joke from him we found at the a-lincoln library: "If this is coffee, please bring me some tea; if this is tea, please bring me coffee." Well said!
*If you ever stop by to see us, you can also take a trip to the Lincoln Library, which is in Springfield, IL. To learn more, visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library.

Meet Laura Angotti, the creator of Rowdy Sprout Kids' Tees!

Laura Angotti, the creator of Rowdy Sprout's cool rock n roll tees and dresses for babies and kids, is our February cool, crazy person! We just received Laura's spring Rowdy Sprout collection, and think it deserves a standing ovation! The genesis of Rowdy Sprout is a wonderful story to be told, as it illustrates the magic of rockin' and rollin' down the road we call life!
Laura was in NYC, with a burgeoning and super cool career doing museum installations when she was inspired by her friend, a childrens shop owner, to create rock baby and kids tees. Rowdy Spout was born in that instant, and Laura let it grow as a "side project" while getting a graduate degree in, and successfully obtaining a career in, Costume Design.
Now, what's a gal to do besides thank her lucky stars, when she has two full-time, successful businesses? Laura chose to put her attention and love into making vintage-inspired, fully licensed rock clothes and tees for babies and kids! Laura says that her tees are meant to " bring out the nostalgia of rockers past in parents and grandparents alike!" Laura is thrilled everyday that Moms, Dads and kids love her tees! She states, " I have 2 friends who kids refuse to leave the house with anything else on, " and how much she loves that, because, "You're never to young to show your own funky style!"
Now, just one more thing before we get to Laura's interview.... Laura has brought her heart and soul to her cool shirts, and everyone who wears 'em can feel the love! The one musician she longs to bring to Rowdy Sprout and meet is Bob Dylan, because he is "a poetic genius" whose music has seen her through the different stages of her life. So, we just thought we'd throw that out there into the universe, just in case Mr. Dylan would like an introduction.....but for now, here is yours! Please welcome Laura Angotti, and her answers to 6 Psycho Questions-

1. What is the coolest thing that has ever happened to you? "Working as assistant costume designer on Slipstream. A movie written, directed and starred in by Anthony Hopkins. I spent a couple months in the desert with him and crew and got to know him very well. At the end of the film he hand painted most of the crew individual paintings. I have it hanging in my house, very special!"

2. What is the craziest fashion statement you have ever made? "See above photo/ burning man / don't ask! P.S. I do not normally look like this but could not help myself!"

3. What is your favorite book? Boat notes! This is a book full of blank pages that my husband and I keep. We both work in film, he more than I. Sometimes I am working a day shoot and he a night shoot in which case we don't see each other all week. Often times one of us is out of town. We write each other notes back and forth in this book at times like this! Something I will always cherish!"

4. What toy can you not live without (keep it clean- this is for the
children!!!)? "My beachcruiser! Living by the beach in Southern California, my friends and I still have a full bike posse. We cruise around in a huge pack in the summer going to parties, the beach, bars! Sooooo much fun!"

5. If you could have a superpower, what would it be? "I can make the most mind boggling mess faster than any adult or child I know! A truly mystifying power! Honestly freakish!" (Any takers for naming this power? Post your Comment now! We'll start: "The Magical Mess!- ed.)

6. Who is the coolest parent you know (ties between your own Mom and Dad are totally understandable!) "Have to say my Dad. Grew up in Indianapolis on old farm land. My dad had me so well rounded at such a young age! He had me on a tractor mowing the lawn, working at his business, playing football, driving cars, testing wine, going to sporting events, traveling European art museums, cooking Italian food and endless other things at a very young age. Though at the time I thought he was an overbearing and over challenging father!"

Thank you ever so to Laura! A sampling of the new Rowdy Sprout is on the right (so cute!), so click that box and start shopping for your lil one's rock n roll lifestyle!

The Groundhogs Have Spoken, But Let's Look Forward!

So, Punxsutawney Phil has spoken what's on his groundhog mind, and that is 6 more weeks of winter! While we do not find that too hard to believe (we're in Chicago, so we're pretty prepared for more than 6 weeks!) we're still super excited about our cool new Spring Arrivals for babies and kids, like the tie dye toddler Rolling Stones dress above! Even after knowing there's more winter to come, we can't help but hope for those rays of sunshine, and love trying on that new spring style! Let us know what styles you're most looking forward to after those 6 weeks of winter, and maybe our collective excitement will bring the spring and prove the groundhog wrong (no offense, Phil!)
