Yo, Baby! Strider Ellis: Cool, Crazy Person!

Watch Strider shred to the White Stripes!

We just got our Yo Baby! Kick Flippers, which are the perfect way to practice all those skating, snowboarding and surfing tricks in the comfort and safety of your home. The multi-colored Kick Flippers are the invention of Yo Baby! founder Bob Ellis, who thought up the idea while watching his son, Strider, practicing tricks one day. Strider started on a Kick Flipper at the age of 3, and in a year, was already on Team Termite using his first board, a Tommy Termite 6.50"with Grind King Hardware! Now 6, Strider Ellis resides in Cali and makes us look like slackers: he is the cutie model for the Yo Baby! and Garage Toys line, on the circuit with Termite Skateboards (Mini's Division!), is an NUI beverages team rider and hooked up with Osiris Shoes and Bern Helments, all while attending elementary school!
Strider obviously spends a bunch of time skating (carefully, as he skates with "the bigger boys") as "The Style King" but, of course, that is not all this little guy's about! Strider is a fervent fan of hamburgers with pickles and mustard ONLY, and he likes to feed worms and crickets to his yellow dragon. He is 'forced' to listen to his 12 yeard old sister's music so he knows all the words, but he much prefers to jam to his brother's rock band when they practice in the garage. He loves to skate for fun (always, always with a helmet!), and is learning how to surf while he also plays baseball and basketball and is counting the years til he can play tackle football! He is a huge fan of both Shaun White and Tony Hawk, but also loves creating art, and his Daddy says he's never throwing away anything that even looks remotely like a drawing of his! Without further ado, here is the "Style King" himself, answering our 6 Psycho Questions which will inspire your lil ones to great heights!

Editors: What is the coolest thing that has ever happened to you?
Strider Ellis: "I got 4th place in a skateboard contest against ten year olds!"

Ed: What is the crazest fashion statement you have ever made?
SE: "At 5 years old, my teacher made me wear a belt because I like to sag and have my boxers hang out."

Ed: What is your favorite book?
SE: "I like this ghost one I bought at the libary(library)....Ghost Story."

Ed: What toy can you not live without?
SE: "My skeleton toy and Yo Babies!"

Ed: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
SE: "I would like to have Spiderman's power to spray webs and swing on buildings."

Ed: Who is the coolest parent you know (ties between your Mom and Dad are totally understandable!)?
SE: "My Dad is really cool for sure!"

Psycho Baby presents the Pritzer Preschool Birdhouse Project!

As part of the first Friends of Pritzker Community Art Project, hosts of artists were asked to commission Birdhouses to displayed throughout Bucktown and Wicker Park from May 20 - June 5th, culminating in a auction on June 6th at Wesley Kimler's studio to benefit the Playground Project. Psycho Baby's brick and mortar is proud to say that we have been asked to serve as a gallery for the birdhouses of the tiniest artists being featured, Ms. Russell's am and pm preschool classes!
The little crafters above started a very special birdhouse project of their own that led to the creation of two totally unique and individual birdhouses we have ever seen. The classes began by seeing a bird out their window, and wanted to build something to "call the birds" to them, as birds are hard to study because they don't sit down very much! To look for the right path, they began with a brainstorming session, where they listed everything on a web they already knew about birds (such as that they hatch from eggs and live in nests.) After seeing all that they already knew about birds, the kids still wondered if birds had feathers or fur, if they had bones, and if their beaks are their noses. With all those questions in mind, the Project Approach was used so the kids could set out to experience as much about birds as possible. Birds were crafted by using found materials such as paper bags and cardboard tubes, and have been hung on a tree in their classroom. The kids then used cases and experience boxes (see above) borrowed from the Field Museum's Harris Library, where they learned more and more about our winged friends indigenous to Illionis (including a piece of wood that had been pecked at by a woodpecker!)
When you step up to Psycho Baby, the first thing you will see, gracing our windows are the group drawings made by the class, in which four students worked together (2 thinkers, a recorder, and an artist) to come up with scenes, such as The baby bird is happy or This bird lives in Ohio! Upon entering, you will then be greeted by the brainstorming web, and individual designs the children made as preparation for their group birdhouses (for example, a trampoline should be included so the bird can bouce to their house!). The next step are the prototypes, which each class had chosen to make out of tubing (ala a birdie log cabin). When they didn't get the desired effect, they tried and tried again, until their beautiful birdhouses were ready to take flight! The most requested item to go into the final houses? A potty, which they saw as a real need, so the 'birds wouldn't have to go in public!' Now, that's some thinking!

The am class' goal was to create a wooden roof to shelter the birds, and a cosy inside that our winged friends could relax in, with flags atop it so the birds would know where to land. This coloful creation (above, with class) meets all of their goals with both style and panache! Note the colored posicle stick roof, the many flags to sway in the breeze, and the piece de resistance, the birds' 'living room,' which brings the layered comfort of a nest indoors!

The pm class' focus differed from the am's: the children above wanted to birds to have multiple perches to rest on so they can chirp and socialize, a heart shaped door to welcome them home, and a bedazzled roof, which they made out of cool found materials - among them: buttons, noodles, playing cards and feathers.

We would like to give a cool, crazy "Bravo" to all of the young thinkers and artists who created houses that we wish were big enough for us to fit into! The coolest part is, a little birdie told us all of the birdhouses are on display around the neighborhood, so be sure to drop by, check out the masterpieces from Ms. Russell's classes, and then grab a map and see the entire collection of 50 birdhouses through June 3rd! It would make a wonderful stroll with the family throughout our neighborhood! And remember, the early bird catches the worm!

To view the preschool's project, visit our brick and mortar store at 1630 N. Damen, Chicago, IL 60647

While the word "monster" may conjure up the Loch Ness or Frankenstein to an adult, monsters in a childs world have a way of teaching us all about our feelings, wants and needs. Underneath their blue or pink or red or green fur, these little monsties have giant hearts that want to share their life lessons with the group. Some of our new Monster Gifts include:

He can talk about cookies all day and all of the night, and is really in touch with his emotions regarding his love of baked goods. Say Hello Kitty + Holy Retro Tees, Batman!

Retro Tees
are Mighty Fine! Share your old-school favorite characters in that new baby gift or for your own kids! If you've gotten a bit fuzzy on the details, here's a cheat sheet of some of our favorites, seen on our collection of baby and kids retro tees!

Little Miss Sunshine
: Introduced in Book 4 of the series by Roger Hargreaves, Little Miss Sunshine has been filling the world with laughter since her publication on September 1, 1981. She can turn "Miseryland" into into "Laughter Land" because Little Ms. Sunshine's her name and bringing a ray of sunshine is her game! Another of Sunshine's pals you might recognize is Little Miss Giggles! To learn more about Little Misses and Misters, go here!

Batman
: The elder statesman gracing our retro tees is Batman, who made his first appearance in DC Comics in 1939. Residing in Gotham City, Batman (real identity: Bruce Wayne) fights villians without an "official" superpower, and has been a favorite of children and adults for years. He has starred in a television show with his buddy Robin, as well as many movies such as Batman Begins, which was filmed in part right here in Chicago.

Hello Kitty: Gals everywhere around the world have been saying Hello Kitty since this star's inception in 1974. Created by the Japanese company Sanrio, Hello Kitty has graced everything from tees to erasers, craft supplies and handbags. Hello Kitty is still the cat's meow, and still making pronouncements such as "Don't Burst My Bubble" and "Cute Doesn't Even Begin To Cover It."

What favorite characters from your childhood are you introducing to your little ones? Let us know in the Comments section!

Announcing the Mother's Day Giveaway Winner!

Before we announce, we just have to say how moving all of the entries in our Mother's Day Giveaway were, and how much we appreciate all of you Rockin' Mamas out there! If anyone missed the 'love letters' written to rockin' Moms, please do scroll down and check out the comments section of the original post.

That said, we were so moved by each and every entry, that it was utterly impossible for our editors to be able to select a winner. Each entrant is for sure a rockin' Mom, and each Mama and each writer is a winner in our book. Since the entries were for the lovely Michelle Rubin necklace from Shebang (above), one rockin' Mama needed to be selected (we wish we could have picked you all!), so we thought the best idea would be to randomize the entries.

Without further ado, we would like to congratulate Laurie, who posted the winning entry! The entry, about her friend Tina, is as follows:

"This is for my bestest girlfriend, Tina, that I have known since 3rd grade. She is the mother of 3: Jack, 13; Harrison, 11; and Leah, 9. I admire her unconditional love, patience and perseverance through this trying time of their lives. She is going through a divorce from their father. She remains strong for her children, has time to listen and lets them know how much she loves them dearly. She doesn't involve them with the issues between her and their father, yet is able to answer their questions truthfully. It's a privilege to be her friend and witness her parenting skills. She is a phenomenal mother!"

Thank you, Laurie, and thank you all, for sharing these amazing stories. Thank you to shebang for a rockin' prize. Thanks to all the rockin' Mamas out there for doing what they do daily!
